Description:

2018 - Year of the Dog
2018 is the Year of the Dog according to the Chinese zodiac. This is a Year of Earth Dog, starting from Feb. 16, 2018 (Chinese New Year) and lasting to Feb. 4, 2019. The dog is the eleventh in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac sign. The Years of the Dog include 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018, 2030, 2042... The dog is man’s good friend who can understand the human’s spirit and obey its master, whether he is wealthy or not.
The Chinese regard it as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. The invincible God Erlang in Chinese legend used a loyal wolfhound to help him capture monsters.

Generally speaking, people born in the Year of the Dog have good fortune in 2017. If they work hard, they can make ends meet. There will be some good opportunities and breakthroughs in their jobs. At the same time, they should care about and communicate with their beloved ones. As for their health, they might be troubled by stomach diseases. Thus, it is necessary to stick to a healthy and balanced diet and do some exercise.

 Activities and schedules
The preparation starts seven days before the Chinese New Year’s Eve, and the holiday celebration will last to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Following a day-by-day guide, Chinese people have different things to do each day. Among these days, the Eve and the first day are the peak time, when people will have big dinners and set off fireworks.

 Customs & Activities
Before the Spring Festival, every family will have a thorough house cleanup and go for festival items shopping. The red spring couplets, red Fu Character, and red animal paper cut are pasted for decoration. Also, new clothes must be bought, especially for children. At the reunion dinner on
Lunar New Year’s Eve, people from the north will eat dumplings, which southern people are used to having Niangao (glutinous rice cake). Red Envelopes are given to kids and elders to share the blessing.
Why is the red colour so popular? It’s because red symbolizes happiness, prosperity, and good luck in Chinese culture.

 Modern Activities
New practices and activities take place as some old traditions fade away. The train and bus tickets can be scarcely purchased during the Spring Festival Travel Rush; newlyweds squabble over who's home to go; bachelors are so anxious and stressed that they rent a fake girlfriend home; socializing by phones are highly welcomed.

 Taboos
At the start of a Lunar New Year, Chinese people will take their daily practices as predictive signs for the coming year. Many bad words like “death”, “broken”, “killing”, “ghost” and “illness” or “sickness” are forbidden during conversations. Crying, washing, lending, and taking medicine are also considered unlucky.
